Grade (A-F scale): D
Overview: This is the company that installed the roof on my house (1998). Before purchasing from previous owners, a roof area we were concerned with was inspected by this company and found to need no attention. It leaked down into my kitchen the very first weekend I moved in. Numerous calls to this company went unreturned, they blew me off.
I moved into my home just after Memorial Weekend in 2001. The very first Friday I moved in we had heavy rains and I arrived to a puddle of water on the kitchen floor.
Prior to purchase, one of the items on a list that needed addressing was some window flashing on the 2nd story which lies directly above the kitchen. It had tar smeared between the shingles in an apparent patch job. The inspector also had pointed out what looked to be a dried water spot on the ceiling below. The previous owners had the roofer come out and investigate this and another flashing area. D. Kevin Pratt wrote a letter to the owners saying neither of these areas needed addressing. Obviously they were incorrect.
I called them within the week of the first leak to have them come look at the situation. Mr Pratt returned my first phone call and left a message, however after that none of my subsequent calls were ever returned. After several calls it seems the secretary spoke with someone who said I would need to speak with Tony. Tony never returned several more phone calls either.
The area in question was a small gentle sloped "window pan" area. This area did not seem to be properly built, in fact it would 'flex' when I pressed on it with my hand. It leaked a total of 3 times before being fixed, each time under heavy rain. In other areas of the country, a roof slope of less than 4/12 (4 inches vertical drop per 12 inches horizontal) requires some type of rain/ice sheathing to prevent leaking, which this window pan obviously did not have. I question why they even built it like this. I like in an area where every few houses are almost identical, or mirrored. One house I can see from the window in question did not have such a window pan, but just had the roof come directly up to the bottom of the window.
I ended up having another company come out and make the slope of that roof section normal again, and have not experience any leaks since.
This is a business that did shoddy work and would not back up their own inspections.
