A Brief History of the Katana
- The name Katana was originally attached to Suzuki's GS models
during the late 70s and early 80s.
- In 1988, Suzuki released the first GSX600F Katana with the look and
feel of modern sport bikes.
- Later that year, a Katana 600 won the 65th Annual AMA
National Championship Race.
- Only minor changes were made from 1988 until 1997, none of which
affected the look of the bike's body you saw on the previous page's picture.
- In 1998, Suzuki introduced a new body design for the Katana, and also
made many changes to its internals.
- Because the Katana's main emphasis in not on racing, it has recently
been classified more as a Sport Touring bike rather than a Supersport bike.
- The modern Katana also has a 750cc big brother. It also used to have
an even bigger 1100cc brother from 1988-93.
